Recently, the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi, who is also known as Bobi Wine, released a freedom song titled ‘Tuliyambala Engule’, a song that has caused a fair amount of controversy from fans of Bobi Wine the church.
Some Pentecostal church leaders are up in arms, accusing Bobi Wine of desecrating a Christian song by appropriating it for secular and political ends.
The question is, Did Bobi Wine do anything wrong? Did he break any laws?
Officials from the Uganda Performing Rights Society, lawyers and arts professors, are also caught in the middle.
According to them, this song is not registered anywhere in their records, not to a particular group or individual. It is a global song of hope, translated in like a hundred languages, so that makes it a people’s song.
If masses have no problem with it, and seem to like, then Bobi Wine gets a free pass.
