According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, Chaka Chaka was escorted to Entebbe airport by the police and a team from the immigration department on Tuesday afternoon after being detained inside her room at Pearl of Africa hotel.
Sources say since yesterday security around the hotel was unusually beefed up, with Chaka Chaka under close surveillance. Only residents were being allowed in to go past the main gate with other revelers ‘forced’ to buy tickets at Shs 100,000 to be able to access the hotel gardens. There was a heavy presence of security all over the hotel premises.
When security detained her inside her room preventing her from going for rehearsals, they demanded all staff and journalists present to switch off their phones. The armed men then demanded to speak to her in private.
Enanga, said in the statement, “…that a security task team in close coordination with immigration officials has this [Tuesday] afternoon escorted Ms Muhinga Tabizodwa Yvonne popularly known as Chaka Chaka to Entebbe International Airport where she boarded her next immediate flight to South Africa via Kigali. The foreign musician had initially been granted an ordinary visa, which was cancelled by immigration officials after it was realized she had come as a performing artist in one of the New Year’s events. She was advised together with her promoters to apply for a working visa for her music performance and avoid the pretense of being an ordinary visitor.”
Enanga said, “The ordinary visa cannot enable her perform in any income-generating activity within the country. This has been done by immigration officials together with the security team to help maintain the integrity of our immigration rules for all visitors to our country including foreign musicians.”
She arrived in Uganda on Monday, December 30, ostensibly to sing on Tuesday at Buganda kingdom’s end-of-year show Enkuuka Y’Omwaka.
Music promoter Abby Musinguzi also known as Abitex who brought Chaka Chaka into the country said she was barred from leaving her hotel room.
“Yvonne’s issue is hard to understand. The last time I spoke to her in the morning, she was leaving the hotel to come for a soundcheck at the venue. But I was later informed that she was being detained by security officers at the hotel who said they were offering her security. She was refused to leave the hotel,” said Abitex
Enanga said Chaka Chaka was deported back to South Africa via Kigali, Rwanda aboard South African Airways. Insider sources say, Chaka Chaka’s very public admiration for the political prowess of People Power leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine could have stirred her problems with the state.
While in Kampala last year, Chaka Chaka referred to Bobi Wine as Uganda’s Nelson Mandela. The legendary singer revealed that the Kyadondo East MP is a very much admired icon in South Africa and is often linked to South Africa’s apartheid freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.
Kyagulanyi later performed along South African legend Yvonne Chaka Chaka at Serena hotel. The charity concert organised by Shule Foundation was aimed at raising funds to build a school for former street kids.
Chaka Chaka has also previously endorsed presidential Bobi Wine to take on President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 general elections.
Bobi Wine himself has been banned from performing in Uganda since 2018 with Museveni claiming that he keeps telling the international community that Uganda has been run down and the people have become poorer. According to Museveni, since in Bobi Wine’s assessment, Ugandans are poor, then he shouldn’t be performing to get their little money.
When we contacted the immigration office at Entebbe, it referred us to police. Chaka Chaka has previously performed in Uganda without any troubles and claimed she was the second ‘first lady’ after Barbie Itungo, Bobi Wine’s wife.
Interestingly, in a video she posted on her Twitter handle at 7.28 pm, Chaka Chaka denied being deported by Ugandan authorities, saying she wasn’t kidnapped or deported as has been reported. She assured her “worried” country, fans and husband that “everything is fine” and that it is her who took the decision not to perform at Enkuuka because so many things had not been explained to her prior.
